Janice Long RIP

RIP Janice Long

RIP DJ and presenter Janice Long – first woman daytime Radio 1 DJ, first regular presenter of Top of the Pops, presenter at Live Aid, and by all accounts a lovely woman. And friend of John Peel – as can be seen on these segments on the excellent Top of the Pops: Story of series (please don’t grizzle at me if you can’t see these, nothing to do with me – use a VPN. Music rights are a right pain on YouTube).

Personally love hearing Janice Long on Radio 1 and when she stood in on 6Music, in fact I didn’t know she was part of the station in the first few years. And she gave Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Amy Winehouse their first major radio exposure, and was an early supporter of The Smiths, Adele and Primal Scream.

I also didn’t know she was the sister of Keith Chegwin? And that she was pre-fame on the first episode of 3-2-1!

Love her and Peelie’s reaction to Robert Palmer’s ‘Addicted To Love’, cannot imagine this being allowed now!
