Top Of The Pops was a victim of the classic BBC tactics used when they no longer want a long-running show: ‘revamp’ then shove it to a new slot where no-one is likely to watch, after a few months declare the show has no viewers and kill it off. Some may say it was a mercy killing, and I would agree; the show was less about good, fun pop and more about interviews, features and general ‘showbiz news’.

I grew up with TOTP during the 80s, hit after hit after hit, chart rundown, more hits (albeit mimed – cue The Smiths performing with their instruments not plugged in). Obviously those days are gone, but not forgotten.

Pop may not be dead, but it’s certainly running an uneven pulse in Intensive Care. Pop as in Popular music that appeals to the widest range of people is increasingly marginalised in favour of targetted niches. TOTP always had a problem with the fragmentation of pop in the 90s, and it never managed to get on too of it.
