It’s 15 years since the sad death of John Peel – I think music is still reeling from that one, I know radio and support for independent music definitely is.
And also 15 years since the idea for this podcast and blog started, since his death inspired me to start it in desperation about who would continue his work supporting new music and mashups. I decided that it would be us – many of us, I am not alone – Dandelion Radio is testament to that legacy as well, as is BBC 6Music. Dandelion Radio has a great roundup this month of bands and artists featured by Peel which is really worth listening to – as is the whole station. And 6Music was set up specifically in part to play his massive session archive.
His inspiration is everywhere…as the CSLM tune points out, he is not enough (and reminds us of his partly forgotten love of hard dance and electronica), We all need to be a bit John Peel to keep that spirit alive – genre blind and supporting new and alternative artists. I am always wanting to hear something new – that could be from chart pop or the deepest darkest realms of Bandcamp or submitted mp3.
Thanks John, and yes, the nation needs you.
