Certified Mashup Girl - Departure mashup bootleg bastard pop album downtempo

Downtempo is the new Rock n Roll

Continuing the downtempo theme from Hallmighty & MarkJMix’s latest album is the return to mashups by Departure with a new name – Certified Mashup Girl (also on Soundcloud). This came out at the end of September so yes I am late on this, but it has a chilled downtempo fusion of the likes of Brian Eno, DJ Shadow, Miley Cyrus, Kanye, Billie Eilish, The Killers and many more things I don’t know what they are!

Think Kleptones in their downtempo moods, or Colatron, there’s a lot of deep cuts and feels like there is a narrative here, almost a concept album. The title of this post comes from a conversation with CMG/Departure, and I do hear a shift back to the soundtrack/ambient worlds of those two and the likes of DJ Earlybird and early Loo & Placido and DJ Earworm. If so, I am totally here for these 3am Eternal Mashups from the Dark Time of the Soul.

My favorites are WRUNAWAY – Miley Cyrus collides with Kanye – my favourite Kanye track actually, DEEP BLUE WAY – Brian Eno’s Deep Blue Day meets hip hop in the aisle at 30,000 feet, #GRAYSCALE IN A #GOLD WORLD giving DJ Shadow a 2021 update and TRICKERY IN THE WATERS with Billie Eilish’s Ocean Eyes getting a lush horizontal re-rub. And FROM 2007 ONWARD feels like one of those tracks that is telling a personal story, even though I don’t know the sources.

Certainly will feature a few of these on upcoming podcasts – shame I heard this after I had finished #355 but hopefully the next mashup podcast won’t take 2 months!
