Radio Clash 25: Best Mashup of 2021

Over at /r/mashup MixMstrStel is running a vote to find the best mashup of 2021, which got me thinking, Bootie Best of style what were my best mashup of 2021 (and crumplbangers and blends and mashup related things)?

(I did vote for one which was a really hard choice – you can see my decision at the end of this post, and why).

So I went through all the mashup podcasts of 2021 – they now have their own category, woo! and refined it down to a quick rough list of 25 my favourites of 2021. This really is off the top of my head stuff, if I thought about it too long and re-listened to every mashup of 2021 I featured it would drive me mad with indecision!

Also unlike Bootie not thinking of doing an album – again if I did that I’d go down a rabbit hole of it being ‘perfect’ and making covers etc, don’t have the time and it would be too obsessive.

EDIT and just realised I missed Zyle & Marc Johnce’s “Doobie Disco” mainly cos I’ve not played it yet…grr., it got delayed by all the Xmas shit. I did look at the stack to play but missed that one….

And some of my other faves for best mashup of 2021 – like Grave Danger’s and Raheem D’s Weeknd ones were actually not released in 2021. I played a lot of great older mashups this year, deep diving in the archives – new to me, but not actually new.

My decision for the best mashup of 2021 to propose over at Reddit?

I like melancholic mashups more, things that make me feel are a good sign, that provoke a deeper emotion. I tend to go with my heart with mashups I like best. So it was the slower ones like daftbeatles, Homebound Kid, Carrot08, Burt Reynolds Hallmighty or Marc Johnce that were in the running,

I think it has to be Marc Johnce – Stuck With Mr. Lonely which reminds me of the loneliness during lockdown and the video was both sweet and moving (even though I hate Bieber) and works perfectly. It’s a rare retro source in mashups (Bobby Vinton) and we need more of those.

So that’s my vote for best mashup of 2021. I’ll change my mind next hour, day, week!
