Two weeks ago (it feels a lot longer!) Adriana from Bootie called out the laziness of non-genre clashed mashups of Lil Nas X’s Montero (Call Me By Your Name) in a tweet. This caused a storm, not just some drama but also a flurry of Montero mashups that weren’t pop vs pop.
Myself I did two mashups – both Beatles – in response, and now the Crumplbangers crew organised by iWillBattle have assembled the response mashups into a compilation called Mashtero – focusing on mostly the genre-clash ones and excluding ones that were earlier or unrelated or putting them into the bonus tracks.
This was a real struggle in part because of the mode Montero is in, Phyrgian, WTF? And the key change on the choruses, which seemed to flummox a lot of people, but thanks to advice from Vixoriadrift, ToTom and others, we got there in the end I think.
Unless you REALLY like Montero, Mashstero at 28 tracks might be more Lil Nas X than you can take, but there are some really good tracks here. Hopefully Montero’s 15 minutes aren’t up just yet…but proud to be on this compilation. I rarely get asked to be on compilations or albums, actually *cough*.
I’ve not listened to every one, but the album is very diverse from pop, rock, punk, techno and heavy metal bangers to plunderphonic / crumpl tracks and jazz, country, funk and soul. Something for everyone!
The ones I have I can really recommend Adriana’s Cure one, ToTom’s excellent one with George Michael’s Faith, iWillBattle’s Iron Maiden mashup which is a bonus track, pomDeter’s Slayer one which in ‘Will it Mash’ style both myself and ToTom gave some advice on via Twitch. And I like GaraGara’s dub one which as well as being a rarity in the mashup world, a reggae mashup that’s not Bob Marley or Sean Paul, that acapella weirdness blends surprisingly well with dub and dancehall.
EDIT: listening now, it holds up surprisingly well as an album….I’d add GladiLord’s Kill Switch Engage to that list. And loving the Shirley Bassey ending by departure.
(It is nice confirmation that I was on the right track to try and hide the nastiness in the bass of the acapella with heavy guitars, I did try those Slayer and Iron Maiden tracks when I did my first Montero mashup, I even tried Black Sabbath and Judas Priest – but me and heavy metal timings are not on talking terms. I don’t like mashups that speed up or slow down unless it’s seamless – which is quite hard, and pomDeter has managed that here. Nas Tripper was the closest I got to that idea.).
