But there is a serious side – the video being about ‘sin’ and his sexuality – literally fighting his demons since he was endlessly told he was ‘going to hell’ so he went there with a big FU. A bit like John Grant with ‘JC Hates Faggots’, it’s a middle finger to those hypocritical types who claim to be Christian but missed all the core messages about love.
And he released it with a letter to his 14 year old self:
‘Dear 14 year old Montero, I wrote a song with our name in it. It’s about a guy I met last summer. I know we promised to never come out publicly, I know we promised to never be “that” type of gay person, I know we promised to die with the secret, but this will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist.
You see this is very scary for me, people will be angry, they will say I’m pushing an agenda. But the truth is, I am. The agenda to make people stay the fuck out of people’s lives and stop dictating who they should be. Sending you love from the future.”
And indeed the Xtian right have started on him in the States, but he has shut them down rather magnificently saying “I am an adult. I am not gonna spend my entire career trying to cater to your children. That is your job.” and more recently “i spent my entire teenage years hating myself because of the shit y’all preached would happen to me because i was gay. so i hope u are mad, stay mad, feel the same anger you teach us to have towards ourselves.”
