Sad to hear of the death of MF DOOM aka Daniel Dumile – announced on New Year’s Eve but following the weirdness of 2020 he actually died on Halloween. I have to admit I never really ‘got’ his work even as a hip-hop fan – yes I tried many times. Maybe it’s the comic book references I am not getting?
But a lot of the musicians I love cite him as an influence, and it is obvious that without him a lot of music, let alone hip hop would be very different. For an independent artist rightly hating the music industry for what happened to him and his brother, his influence goes surprisingly deep. Thom Yorke is one of those, collaborating with him and saying he was his favourite rapper – so this pairing of Radiohead with various Madvillain tracks by William Maranci is lovingly done and works well.
