Two pioneers have recently died – the first many probably won’t know by name but they definitely know the sample – Vaughn Mason of Bounce, Rock. Skate, Roll fame as sampled by Daft Punk many times, The Avalanches, De La Soul, Digital Underground, Kurtis Blow and just about EVERYONE – see the Whosampled list of 160 songs. It was a well sampled break, hook and bassline.
The other many people know – Bill Withers, of Aint No Sunshine fame – but also a sample pioneer, with Grandma’s Hands being the basis for Blackstreet’s No Diggity amongst others.
