Alan Hawkshaw and Les Hurdle on The Champ

You might not know the names, but you certainly know the tune…apparently the most sampled UK track of all time, Mohawks ‘The Champ’ is a real hiphop staple…and amazingly was recorded in ONE TAKE. Respect.

Also Alan wrote the Grange Hill theme and Les did that amazing bass line on it…Alan did a lot of the songs and themes that formed a lot of people’s lives…and also a lot of the stock library music on labels such as KPM which only fairly recently is being revisited and as the Open University would say ‘re-appraised’.

Hopw there are more in the WhoSampled series because there are a few originators I’d love in that chair, who deserve a lot more respect and knowledge, from Winstons to David Axlerod to to The Meters and The Honey Drippers (if they’re still alive) to Brian Auger and Bob James and many many more… (via PomDeter)
