Paxman vs Brand – voting for a new future

Ahh I finally see what the fuss is about…strange as I came to it hearing of the mass-intake of breath and tutting about Russell Brand advising people not to vote, the actual interview was passionate but not something I disagree with completely. I guess Daily Mail et al hated his previous comments about them, and decided to try and put the boot in…thing is, love him or hate him he’s saying something that’s well worth paying attention to. People are angry, people are disaffected, people can see the corruption and lack of care on all sides. I think a lot of people are still hanging on to the previous system, rather than looking or pressing for new ways.

I wouldn’t say ‘don’t vote’ personally, but I understand where that comes from, and treat it less harshly in these times. When I was a student it seemed a lazy sort of apathy, especially when there seemed to be some alternatives. Now, well the system as it is, is completely fucked – from the ecology to the corrupt corporates down to trying to stop charities even campaign near an election…I’ve never been in a time of revolution, or just a ‘time of revolt’ to use the phrases’ less loaded little brother, but I can imagine the state ignoring the mass populace unhappiness with ALL systems like now leads to either civil war, complete ecological disaster taking every level with it, a complete systemic breakdown like in Ancient Rome, a move to extremes like fascism which is already happening, or full on rioting in the streets like in 1789. Accusations that years ago would make people brand you Citizen Smith, now get a weary sigh or nod. It just feels so inevitable, palpable, unstoppable. It’s that feeling, that future that needs to change, rather than bunkering down into a cupcake Blitz mentality.

Is it the same student style apathy? Only time and action will tell, I would say if you disengage from the existing system go forth and create wondrous new children, new systems, new realities, don’t use it as an excuse to do nothing and grumble. Both are valid as long as the results are creative and don’t support evil…which is why I find it odd so many defend such a creaky system, one that works for so few, and definitely them aint dyin’ for you (thank you Pusha T).

Who knows which way it’s going to go, but I can tell you which way will not be pretty – people will starve, die or kill. And what do we do with such messenger? We shoot him – proverbially here, but expect him to provide like those who criticised Occupy, a full complete breakdown schedule of What We Should Do – because we have no clue, it’s easier to criticise those who say ‘we need to change’ rather than change, it’s easier to pick holes rather than work for solutions. We wonder why new leaders don’t come when we crucified and killed the old ones, or they became corrupted and bitter prostitutes – neglecting the fact that this time, the only people who can change this horrible coming future is us.
