Don’t believe the hype; the idea that rabid students are taking over the streets and causing anarchy. Yes the misuse of kettling (again? Have the Met not learned?) caused this – but check out the schoolKIDS who are protecting the van sending out the important message that The Fuck the Fees campaign is peaceful across the country with students occupying libraries and schools and even kids as young as 14 taking part, all peacefully. It’s a very small minority causing trouble – but of course peaceful demonstrations will and are being ignored and the media wants to protray the kids as violent and dangerous to sell papers and get viewers. Usual scare tactics.
Sorry, to borrow the famous phrase – the kids *are* alright – the video and pic above was taken by myself following a noisy yet polite protest group down Charing Cross Rd and Trafalgar Square on the way to Parliament – no aggro, no hassle. It’s a small minority and I wouldn’t be surprised if agent provocateurs (check their shoes! LOL) or non-student anarchists are involved (not against anarchists, just duffing up a police van is pretty dumb in the scale of things).
So I support the students…and deplore the usual media scare tactics, and the too-old-too-soon reactionaries my age that mumble about kids today being lazy or violent (who disgracefully never protested themselves, either the Poll Tax nor the cuts nor the war)…maybe you should head down to a protest to see for yourselves rather than being spoonfed Murdoch’s and Cameron’s crap?
EDIT: Love this fellow blogger Jo Furetes Knight who also gets the fact that the wearying older and not-so-older generation and their laughable and unoriginal sarcasm is missing the point, as well as also deploring the fairly mindless destruction, she’s not crossing off a whole generation taking it’s first steps to action.
