Scottish Mashups O Flower of Mashups DJ Firth compilation

Scottish Mashups

The subtitle “The BestMashups In The World Ever Are From Scotland” might be a contentious claim (modelling it on this infamous early compilation) but certainly some of them are, but the main title is O Flower of Mashups a nod to the the Scottish unofficial anthem.

So we have tracks here from many that are no strangers to this blog – Dunproofin, iWillBattle, John Marr, DJ Firth (who organised this compilation), Lewis Wake, PomDeter, GaraGara and DJ J-Brew (not sure if I’ve featured the latter, but the rest most definitely yes).

The idea behind the compilation was that the producers are all Scots born or living there, and there must be one Scottish artist in the mashup. So we have the inevitable Proclaimers, Snow Patrol, Chverrrches and Lewis Capaldi – a frankly surprising amount of the latter – but also nice to see bagpipes, Bay City Rollers, Franz Ferdinand, Deacon Blue, Primal Scream, Runrig, Billy Connolly and lesser known artists all representing. Thankfully zero Simple Minds….

The biggest highlight for me is the three Dunproofin tracks – he did a livestream of him creating Paranoid Heroes (Garbage vs David Bowie) in Acid Pro so nice to see it come together. And despite the Capaldi I do like his two ones using him – the Kid Creole ‘I’m a Wonderful Thing, Baby’ vs Grace – there really aren’t enough KC mashups – Wonderful Grace, Baby (Lewis Capaldi vs Kid Creole & The Coconuts) and the Robyn one  Hold Me On Your Own (Lewis Capaldi vs Robyn). I think the latter will be a grower.

Also John Marr’s Proclaimers + bagpipes is fun – did Kesha do a bagpipe song?  Raising 500 Miles of Hell (Proclaimers vs Kesha) although at this point I do feel I have almost heard every 500 Miles combination already for an entire lifetime….and I like the Dutch bosh-bosh of  DJ Firth – Drugs from Glasgow (Bits n Pieces) (Mau P vs Artmesia) although both of those are Dutch, so I see he broke his own rules there (Bits & Pieces is a Glaswegian adoptive anthem but like ‘Drugs from Amsterdam’ it’s also Dutch (in that case why no Baccara? :-P). It does remind me of Trainspotting.

If they ever do a Vol 2 – I expect to hear some Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura, The Delgados Jesus And Mary Chain, Altered Images, Rezillos, Baccara (well if Bits and Pieces qualifies…), Arab Strap, Strawberry Switchblade, King Creosote, B.A. Robertson, SOPHIE, Slam, Martyn Bennett, Faces/Rod Stewart, John Paul Young, The Vaselines, Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Gerry Rafferty, Ivor Cutler and Jimmy Shand (I doubt you’d get Richie Deluxe out of retirement but I’d try!).
