Great When We Were Young* mashup album

About a month ago there was a challenge on the Crumplbangers Discord set by iWill Battle to mashup acts from the newly announced ‘When We Were Young’ festival in Las Vegas – a massive list of acts mostly from the late 90’s and 00’s mostly from emo and pop-punk genres. When it was announced there was a lot of comment from people online about this first major bit of millennial nostalgia, and whether such a line-up was possible or whether it’s another Fyre Festival in the making.

Anyway the challenge lead to 38 mashups, I think the biggest response on a Crumplbangers challenge yet, and now iWillBattle has put together the When We Were Young album of all the mashups over at Crumplbangers. Listening back it makes a surprisingly good album even given that I don’t really like a lot of that genre. Even myself and DJNoNo took part with a few outliers on the bill – a Linda Lindas mashup, a Wolf Alice mashup, and also a very popular choice of using Jimmy Eat World’s ‘The Middle’.

In fact appropriately self-described ‘aging emo’ Adriana won the challenge with her Katy Perry vs Jimmy Eat World mashup Part Of My Sweetness – one of the highlights here, but actually my favourite of hers in the challenge is Taylor Swift vs Used reverse mashup ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Buried Alive’.

Other ones that were keepers for me are Dunproofin‘s Bring Me The Human League (Bring Me The Horizon vs The Human League), fnogg‘s Evermiddle (Foo Fighters vs. Jimmy Eat World),  oki‘s Can’t Hang My Iron Lung (Radiohead vs. Sleeping With Sirens). It hangs together surprisingly well.

Other mashup producers include MixmstrStel, IamJstncrdble, ah!, Richest Llama, DJ Firth, GladiLord, Castle R, Lewis Wake, Kevin Arlington and Lewis Wake – most of us seemed to do at least 3 mashups – although Adriana and IamJstncrdble were tied for 6 mashups each!

*Well some of us! I was decidedly not young when most of these acts were current *ahem*
