When We Were Young mashup triple bill!

The buzz is big about the When We Were Young festival (is it the new Fyre festival? Is it for real?) and appropriately the Crumplbangers Discord challenge this week was to create a mashup from the massive lineup. And now the festival has added a third date, there is three mashups to download!

The When We Were Young line-up is mostly the sort of band that you heard on old skate videos and forgotten TV series – 90’s and 00’s emo is not my thing – but thankfully a few bands are on there I do like who aren’t part of that scene – Wolf Alice, Linda Lindas and Jimmy Eat World (OK the last one is, but they were more punk than emo).

We have a few firsts here – I think maybe the first Linda Linda’s mashup in existence? Mixing ‘Oh!’ with the Go Go’s We Got The Beat – btw TikTok HATED this track and muted it immediately, as did the Ash Lipstick one. No ‘Sickick/Altego’ style new audience for me! boo. (I made new videos for each track, as well. This is why we can’t have nice things….the new platform but the same old copyright bullshit).

And probably the first Jimmy Eat World drum and bass mashup – at least the first Charles Bukowski drum and bass mashup (I’m not going to spend time checking but pretty sure this is the case). Pretty sure there aren’t many Wolf Alice vs Slowdive mashups either!

There was a massive 35 entries (!!!) this week for the When We Were Young challenge, so pretty proud that the Linda Linda one was 4th and Ash Lipstick was placed 3rd. Slightly surprised at the latter cos it’s quite different but it is one of the best things I’ve done in a long while (which of course meant it sank like a stone on Sowndhaus and online like all my best work).

The winner of course was Adriana from Bootie (emo runs in her blood, and she apparently already has ticked to When We Were Young!)..

GOh Beat! (Linda Lindas vs Go Go’s)

Ash Lipstick (Wolf Alice vs Slowdive)

The last one is very personal to me, a sort of message to myself and others where their art isn’t understood by the masses via Bukowski’s The Genius Of The Crowd. And I like the idea of emo punks going drum and bass 😉
