RIP Elektric cowboy

(Me and Colin (wearing his shades, IHNI why,,, I think his pic was the reverse) outside King’s Arms, 2016)

Sad to hear on Friday the death of Colin aka Elektric Cowboy, one of the early Bastard / bootleg crowd (well before it got called mashup). His work has been featured frequently on the podcast back in the day, and indeed some of his songs e.g. the wonderfully sweary Useless Love Song above (Minty vs PiL) were permanent parts of my first DJ sets.

He retired from making mashups a long time ago, and specialised in making remixes – my favourite of those was his LCD Soundsystem and Chemical Brothers remixes. Here is Belief, his remix of Believe for ‘Flip The Switch’ which someone has strangely added footage of a US Critical Mass-type bike demo:

Many of his mashups aren’t on YouTube or Soundcloud, like my favourites Paris Head (Mylo vs Was Not Was) – one of the few mashups to have the honour of being played twice on the podcast (I usually never repeat things unless I HAVE to play them again) and Get Me Bag which was also an early DJ jam. I was really surprised to find Useless Love Song on there, it’s hard to find cos YouTube ‘helpfully’ keeps correcting Elektric to Electric. Doh.

Sadly a lot of his tunes are lost to the ether, I have some preserved on the Bootleg Archive but let me know if you have some not listed there and I’ll add them, we must preserve Colin’s legacy.

And as I posted yesterday, I hope him and Ebro (essexboy, also very much missed bootleg/bastard pop artist who died a few years ago) are somewhere out there making bangers.
