The Last Bastard(ish) 94

F-me, it seems to be a recent history of finding old videos I’d never think I’d see again. First I found a rip of a BBC2 reality show I briefly appeared in called The Candidate, a June 2000 pilot that never made a full series. I turned up for a job and there was cameras everywhere….you can see my 5 seconds of fame at 27:30. How embarassing!

And then just now I’ve found the video of one of the last Bastards at the Asylum – there was a few after this I think – March 2006 and I think this is Steve SPR on camera (although not totally sure of that since he is shown at 12 minutes in on the first part).

I’m there gossiping to Colin Elektric Cowboy and Mike Cartel wearing my BEAR baseball cap and Don’t Panic shirt. That is Matt Catt at the start, and Dog, Holestar, Churchill and Kieran White Label on the stairs trying to get in, he is filming later too. Inside there is GHP and Ultra396 and Cartel Johnny. And thats just the first 2 minutes! Strictly Kev aka DJ Food was DJing.

I also see Robb Pop Bastard – hold that thought #1 – aka Idiotech, Pojmasta, Baz mate of Cartel and JoolsMF in the crowd, and Ian Fondue I am pretty sure I recognised briefly earlier I think because of his hair as Steve arrived, and pretty sure that’s him wearing his trademark Kangol hat dancing to Kev along with Jo Zephyr and Matt and someone I recognise but totally blank on.

oh and if you wondered what Boom Selection’s the_dr looked like, Dan, he’s twerking? around 10 minutes at the front with the fake moustache weariing the 69 number in part 1. As you do.

Part two features the lovely Audioshrapnel DJing. He always is preceded or quickly followed by lovely because he is. Best Bastard Set ever, the infamous CD-in-a-plastic-bag-and-press-play set.

Anyway this is a treat for those who watched Cartel Mike’s interview on Masters of Mash and wondered what the Asylum really looked like filled fill of bootleggers and randoms (bread and zebra paint not shown). Part 2 & 3 even has Rich’s Dad, never sure if it was an in-joke or he really was the dad of Stinkin’ Rich who is also there or not, but he was this person who turned up and played harmonica to the mashups!

And I think thats a Shigster – Shiggi at 6:24!

And if I’m not there dancing…I’m outside chatting! Superdan probably appeared earlier and I missed him – but there he is in part 4 3 minutes in. And if you know Bastard – and indeed Bootie lore – you know what song they ended on. A moving moment as I remember.

Interestingly this is on Jimmi Jammes Youtube channel…yes that Jimmi Jammes, the first bootlegger/bastard pop/mashup artist to be played on the Radio Clash podcast. Note the date and hold that thought #2…
