Sad to hear about the death of ‘outsider’ musician Daniel Johnston at 58. He came out from the cold and became quite mainstream in later decades, much beloved by Kurt Cobain, Flaming Lips and many others in the indie scene.
I only saw him once at an Everett True (Meltdown?) arranged gig all with many bands covering his songs, and he only did 3 songs at the end and ran off…but if you don’t know his music, check it out.
Famously someone quipped that “The Devil may have the best musicians but God has got Daniel Johnston on his side.” which was very true, his music isn’t overtly Xtian but very sweet, innocent and pure. And influenced a lot of the Austin / US scene in the 90′ as his tapes were traded everywhere.
