Pretty much my philosophy. I am an optimistic nihilist and a evidence-borne hopeful misanthrope (i.e. I don’t think the human race is automatically stupid, but they are currently on all evidence so far but I wish they weren’t). We’re all gonna die soon, so enjoy yourself (it’s later in the epoch than you think). I’d add though in ways that don’t harm others or the planet more, otherwise that’s just an excuse for apathy over the future, ignoring responsibility. But in the cosmic scale of things it’s true whether you recycle or not is probably not going to change anything other than your local life, or whether our specks smaller than Mickey Rooney will continue to exist.
Personally I’m meh either way on that one, in many ways I think humanity have exceeded their Sell By date, it’s up to everyone to decide not to kill each other and not to dirty up the planet and solar system. Then others keep voting in people like Trump which suggests many just want to end humanity. But in reality the rest of the universe doesn’t care about the views of a few jumped-up monkeys on a tiny planet on the unfashionable arm of the Milky Way. Religionists and others think otherwise, it’s rather cute how humans think they are the biggest bling at the centre of things but it’s not actually true. Bless. The rest of the Universe doesn’t care. You’re on your own, so maybe make things better on this planet because otherwise the tardigrades and cockroaches will have the next go, and everything will be forgotten, collapsed into dust and ruined colonnades.
