Shiny Happy People is a song that even R.E.M. has disowned, so to hear Michael Stipe – the band are happy to wear their Monkees influences on their sleeves – praise this cover by Micky Dolenz is high praise indeed.
And yes it works in the frame of the Monkees psych bubblegum pop, and there’s a new EP Dolenz SIngs R.E.M. – even the 50’s retro footage – is that a child Mickey? really works. Looking forward to this. Also it was produced by Michael Nesmith’s son.
The only sad part: can’t help wondering what the rest of the Pre-Fab Four would have made of this. it would have been a genius Monkees cover.
