(not for the squeamish or under 18!)
We love zombies at Radio Clash, so when I saw the new trailer for a game called Dead Island posted by CjR I jumped at the chance – and was surprised at probably one of the best game trailers – or just trailers full stop – ever. Moving and emotional, it mashes up the feeling of Walking Dead (another fave here) with Coldplay’s Scientist video, Dawn of the Dead and even in my mind the forwards/backwards of Memento. Depressing and gritty, and surprisingly moving for CGI or a video game. It’s art.
First saw it when it was 300-odd views, now 300,000 – so I thought y’all might like this too – seems to have virally jumped from game geekage into popular culture. Like many I hope this is more the Grand Theft Auto or Portal of Zombie games with the emotional attachment from the trailer reflected in the game – rather than the slash slash slash of Gauntlet from 1986 (as most of the gameplay of these games are basically updated Gauntlet clones!).
Certainly I’d be up for a game that works more on a World War Z/28 Days Later level of playing out those ‘what if?’ questions about a zombie invasion or ‘end of the world’ – ie. hiding, defense, and emotional attachment and real fear – rather than the Hollywood shocks of the likes of House of the Dead or Resident Evil (which is still a good game, but a little repetitive).
