I didn’t really want to join in the flood of grief re: Amy Winehouse who died on Saturday, I live not far from where she did, and became a permanent feature of Kirk and mine’s humour about Hawley Arms, Camden and that whole scene (and also a rather strange Bastard link via the Blake assault case – the pub where the Bastard team moved to in Hoxton is where that barman worked)…and also rehashing the same ol’ 27 club tragic diva cliches is depressing. Don’t get me wrong: she was very talented and a great songwriter (and even greater character) but had decided she’d done everything she wanted, sadly.
But then I saw this video and didn’t realise she also covered other types of music, like the Specials (apparently she liked a wide variety of music, not just soul) and unlike a lot of her covers she does this song proud, and the lyrics also seems rather appropriate, I’m sure the irony (as with Rehab) wasn’t lost on her.
