Summer Booty 2023 has just been released, and it has 3 albums of 65 mashups on a summer theme – and of course, as I have in previous years I have a mashup on there (some years I have several, sadly my Independence Day mashup came too late for this one, it has a similar theme though, a goth summer track). I haven’t listened to it yet, so no review, but looking forward to the tracks from Minor Arth, oki, Fissunix and DSP alongside the many other contributors.
Summertime is one of my favourite songs, it’s strangely in a minor key for a summer track, a blues for summer…there’s a disquieting feel about it. Even the off-kilter strings that suggest a heat shimmer but also something less sunny.
So it pairs really well with my favourite track from Everything Everything’s Leviathan from Raw Data Feel, a song about grief and loss of parents – which tracks for me personally. And the lyrics interplay because Summertime has some rather dark lyrics hidden within, such as ‘rise up one morning’. And Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong track is a classic, although I have to confirm, Louis is singing out of key….he was rather a bugger to tune. Another in a long list of ‘I Can’t Bellieve it’s OOK!’
Summer is always a weird time for me, for several reasons…there’s a good reason one of my other favourite summer song is ‘Cruel Summer’. So this is a blues mashup for summer; probably as welcome as rain on a sunny day but into every summer rain does fall. And for me a dark time always lurks – especially this summer.
