Hard-Up Hiker, Bankrupt Backpacker, new YouTube channel

Back to YouTube Part 1: Hard-Up Hiker – Reviews & Tips To Save Money

Related to some of the ideas that I was talking about at the end of Jaunt 3 was to work more with video. Now this new Hard-Up Hiker / Bankrupt Backpacker channel ostensibly might not seem that related to my artwork, but all going well it will. I have big plans – I am eventually aiming at a sort of unique mix of the likes of hiking Youtubers Liam Brown, Paul Messner with an extreme form of the art in the environment from people like Alwyn Crawshaw who I grew up with (BLACK! BLACK! oh no that was the Fast Show spoof 😉 and hacks like Big Clive but with a hiking/camping slant.

Or a plein-air Backpacking Bob Ross for those across the pond…but Alwyn was cooler (and just realised where I probably also got my love of Breton caps from – thanks Alwyn!). And maybe as a friend has suggested, a touch of Jack Hargreaves, or Fred Dibnah or John Betjeman if I mix in the local history I talk about in the Jaunt articles into the videos themselves?

Am I aiming too low? *gulp*

Gear reviews and hacks are what I am starting with (Keep It Simple Stupid), but I want to include video of hikes, my extreme watercolour painting on the sides of cliffs and basically inspire people to not only get out there – but get out there and paint and draw. I feel rather alone as a plein-air artist at the best of time, but as a plein-air walker/hiker/artist hybrid with a local history and ancient culture/industrial archaelogy fetish, I seem to be unique.

I’m sure that isn’t the case, but I’d like some company out there.

Anyway, starting slowly, and in my drippy bathroom, here’s a hack about how to hack a titanium cooking pot to have silicon handles like a MSR Titan. So subscribe to Hard-Up Hiker for more videos.

Although be careful about this mod, the reason I didn’t put the tubing flush with the pot as I warned in the video several times was the possibility of it catching fire (I think that’s why it’s best to get the tubing meant for nitro/fuel which I did, has a higher burn/heat point of 200C, unlike their cheap aquarium tubing – but still do keep the tubing away from the flames! Partly why I inverted the handles as well).

If you’re worried, then only do this mod on the top handle, or the tops of the cup handles – I will report back if I have issues. People have done this mod without issues for many years, but the original GearTalk post did warn about these issues and using high temperature proof silicon and it seems that this YouTuber missed that?Hard-Up Hiker – Reviews & Tips to Save Money + Art Hiking
