I knew of Mungo’s Hifi and Marina P’s excellent cover – well mashup of The Beat Goes On with Dennis Alcapone really – called The Beat Goes Ska – and Matt Catt reminded me of it again a few hours ago. Mungo’s HiFi has been featured on the mixes before, and indeed this track is in the stack.
What I didn’t know is that there’s a whole album of videos and visuals for the Soul Radio album, created from the Prelinger Archives and other places (I recognise some of the footage)) but matching them to music gives these orphan or home movie images real poignancy.
Like the closer ‘Wouldn’t That Be Something’ – two years ago nearly when this was created with WW2 footage they wouldn’t have know about Ukraine and that those images have extra resonances now…starkly and shockingly so. Would you stay or go? Indeed.
Well worth watching the whole album, beautifully put together.
