Another month, another Hallmighty and MarkJMix album. Disappointed given the title they didn’t drop an Irving Berlin mash but it’s a good collection of mashups – particularly like the first track – HallMighty – Ice Ice Geraldine (Glasvegas vs. Vanilla Ice ft Queen) – not many Glasvegas mashups anymore and this works surprisingly well. Downtempo mopey indie and uptempo funk at the same time?
The other two keepers are both from MarkJMix – the first time I’ve liked more MJM tracks than from Hallmighty on one of their albums, I do feel MJM has stepped up on this album. MJM – Upside Down Rude Boy (Paloma Faith vs. Oasis vs. Rihanna vs. Snoop Dogg) is a surprising mix, the Oasis has been mashed many times but not that song. There might be no Irving Berlin but there is some old-skool samples here via Upside Down by Paloma Faith (interesting where that came from – I think I’ll feature that in another post), I love the electroswing feel of this.
And similarly old and new is MJM – Rain On My Soul (Ryan Innes vs. Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande)) which doesn’t have any old sources and I only know the Lady Gaga, but there is a Motown feel from the backing (Ryan Innes? Didn’t know him but apparently made famous by the US version of The Voice).
