72.5 cover mashup DJ mix continous 72 minutes 72 seconds bootleg bastard pop mix Crumplbangers

72 is back: 72.5

72 the continous mix is back – I think I must have missed a few of them because this is the 5th iteration for A New Crumpl Generation. For those that don’t know, each producer has 72 hours to produce their part and pass it on until 72 minutes is up.

It’s like a mashup game of Chinese Whispers, of mashup consequences, or that old game where you draw the head, someone else draws the body, another draws the legs, etc. You go round and round until the time is up. Or as the page describes it, pass the parcel, although apparently not anyone knows that game 😉

Sadly I couldn’t take part this time because it started around the time my laptop died, and so I was busy fighting that fire, I wasn’t sure if it’d go down again, and that would’ve been a nightmare if it chose to do that during a 72 hour period – I remember how stressful those were, and I had to do it twice once on the first 72! Never really recovered from that experience….

Those taking part are a role-call of many people you’ll know from the podcast and this very blog or Crumplstock, although a few I don’t know: oki, pomdeter, PDSMix (PimpDaddySupreme). Departure, ToToM, DanUntitled, DJ Firth, iWillBattle, Vixoria Drift, duuzu, Richest Llama, jpr, Dunproofin, reconthuse, Scott Cairo, IamJstncrdble, GaraGara, Hawkins, William Maranci, ah!, CastleR, Stational, Felix Five, MsMiep, DiamondBrickZ, Thomas L Jackson

As with all 72’s – listening back is a mixed bag – a whirlwind of sources, I remember people only just used 4-6 sources back in the day? here it seems people crammed in 10+ into each section (some many more – Stational *cough*)! Some great bits, some not so great, but like some hyper efficient buses or swarm of Ubers at the Oscars, another one will be along in 72 seconds anyway.

First impressions

I think the biggest surprises so far is Vixoria Drift using Venetian Snares – was NOT expecting that – and props to the H2G2 intro, duuzu using Paul McCartney’s Coming Up, and one of his own tracks, Richest LLama dropping Ylvis, Bjork speaking utter rubbish, Yello, Ievan Polkka, Edelweiss and err Hot Stepper?! MUCH CRUMPL! Scott Cairo dropping Queen Donna Summer., Lene Lovich, Viagra Boys and samples Pilchard on Masters of Mash being rude and The Monkees.

Gara Gara going from Denise LaSalle to the much missed Toots and the Maytalls, Hawkins mixing Tom Jones and the Cure – like the Richest Llama I’d like to hear a full version of that – and ah! trolling Oasis with Blur – what IS that dreadful/wonderful Oasis cover?! Stational using ALL the sources over the lovely Plastic Love (respect for using one of my faves, must’ve been a hard thing to do)….MsMiep dropping doo-wop and Derek and Clive….Thomas L. Jackson dropping Katamari On The Rocks! YES! That part has a total Lemon Jelly/Avalanches vibe.

PDS dropping in Thundercats outtakes vs Thunderstruck made me LOL and Perrey & Kingsley vs Khia and Rock The Casbah and Color Me Bad…..so wrong, it’s right. And nice air horn ending by danuntitled especially for those of you doing Whamageddon 😉
