Lemon Hed Records vol 1 compilations plunderphonics vapourwave ambient electronica cover compilation

Lemon Hed Vol 1

As you might have heard on RC 346, I am really into sample collage and vapourwave ambience at the moment – in big part because of Departure and the record label she co-runs with Lav Kazan.

I blogged about them before but recently they released their first compilation – an easy way to get a handle on the label and what each artist sounds like. I’ll admit I was rather daunted by the list of their releases, so this has been a great help to earmark what I need to check out further.

As well as Departure and Homebound Kid being highlights, also like the moody yet upbeat John Carpenter/serialist ambience of Darkmoth, Thaupenhawk’s murky orchestrails, xylophone funk/drum and bass? of hanahata and half-remembered fractured happy pop moments of cute auxiliary.

Also I like 絡み合った運命 (Intertwined Fate if Google Translate is correct) with 植被 (Vegetation) which comes across as a forgotten Twin Peaks tune – all 80’s daytime TV yet haunted., like ghosts in the machine (anyone remember that? No, not the book, or the films or the Torchwood episode, the mid 80’s British TV series showing avant-garde video art in prime time. Those visuals would go very well with this music!)

Think horror soundtrack, chilled, Avalanches collages, glacial, funky, hauntology, mutant electronica, glitch, even Caretaker if he was using forgotten 80’s cassettes instead of 78’s…
