Not good news – Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo aka Daft Punk have split after 28 years (and seemingly retired as a band). They announced it in a video called ‘Epilogue’ which for robots is surprisingly emotional, as one robot self destructs and the other walks into the sunset.
I’m guessing this means Daft Punk is over…or maybe Thomas is continuing alone but the Pitchfork confirmation with their publicist suggests it’s the former. Although I had noticed things had slowed down and gone quiet, never a good sign.
One of the best bands I have seen live in 2007, I use both words loosely, although they were mashing up their songs live, and playing machines rather than traditional musical instruments.
I guess this is the age of things falling apart and duos splitting. This strikes a heavy chord with me since during lockdown I had to split with one of the friends I saw that Daft Punk show, we had a similarly long friendship. Maybe it will return, maybe it will self destruct, I don’t know.
But I do know things change, and this world and that friendship aren’t the same as they were anymore.
