So much debate about the new Ghostbusters trailer – to me it looks disappointing but apparently it’s sexist and misognyistic to say that or something? I have no problem with the sex of the cast, in fact I WANTED it to succeed but also dread the fact that if it fails it will probably doom a whole lot of future female-led films.
This trailer remade with the old footage points out apart from the terribly dodgy ‘sassy streetwise’ black person trope, it looks like a VERY lazy remake (I can’t comment on the cast being worse since I don’t think I’ve seen them in anything, they are not the problem. Basically remaking the first film with worse dialogue is the problem. The shorter fan recut trailer proves the dialogue point but cutting most of that stuff out.).
It looks like the International Trailer addressed some of these – sexism and race, and a snappier cut, but it still looks worryingly lame and lazy. I hope I’m wrong.
I don’t think in fact it is ‘profiteering’ on nostalgia in the way other fanboy movies are (say some of the Star Wars movies, Marvel and Watchmen), it’s actually profiteering in another way – a cynical assumption that the kids of today haven’t seen the originals so they can just regurgitate the original plot like Slimer with ectoplasm. Kerching! *sigh* (via Eric Kleptone)
