Interesting how it seems to be a bit of a desert then something comes along that you didn’t even know about and it transpires that stuff was happening under your nose.
After a chance (haha!) reference to Chano aka Chance the Rapper I checked out his Acid Rap mixtape and 10Day. My favourite song is Cocoa Butter Kisses, featuring Vic Mensa, who has also just dropped his own mixtape Inannetape featuring this gem, which would have been the Song of the Summer if I’d heard about it back then:
Turns out they are all part of Save Money Army, a Chicago based collective which seems to specialise in more positive and more psychedelic take on the usual grind. Also I think loosely affiliated with that was Kids These Days, a band featuring Vic Mensa which you can see above.
It’s all a bit like Odd Future but on happier drugs and less hate/horror. Probably because unlike middle-class background in LA where OFWGKTA grew up, these people are living that in Chiraq, and if you come from somewhere with one of the highest murder rates in the country I’d bet you don’t want to be constantly be reminded of that fact?
Sadly Kids These Days is no more, but looks like Vic Mensa is onto bigger things. You can download the Kids These Days album for free too!
