It’s easy to respond to hate with hate – groups like the Nazis/fascists and Fred Phelps comedy church of Hate are easy to insult and get aggressive with, but the sad fact is they thrive on this.
I love the approach of Not In Our Town to make something positive and fun but also a message of unity rather than division. Yes ‘you shall not pass’ sometimes has it’s place especially when the fascists go on the offensive, but also a mass passive resistance sends a message to everyone including those in the community that might be attracted by hate groups that it’s not OK, there isn’t tacit consent for what these groups are saying, and that unity and diversity are not to be feared.
The singing school is beautiful and glad that the school got behind a peaceful yet vocal protest, confounding a divisive message with one of unity, very moving. This kind of unity against all forms of hate from all groups gives me hope at a time where the media are portraying the community as cold and hateful, like with the ‘ground zero mosque‘, are-they or aren’t-they gay witchhunts (?) and ‘natural law’ edicts from a ridiculous silly old man coming to beatify a gay man or veils. Those things serve to divide, and promote hate for various reasons (usually political) but nice to see there are those who don’t listen to such fear and make up their own mind.
