How an Illegal Mashup Reignited British Pop

Great video explaining how Richard X et al reinvented British pop music, and it makes a good case for that (although I feel that he was treated like an outsider for a lot of it, even though he was a hitmaker, they took his ideas but shut him out?).

And the Gary Numan comment that Freak Like Me was better than the original Cars is really lovely – and it seems despite the debate in the comments for this video, he still believes that. Lovely guy.

I don’t disagree with that premise but the history is a little off.- Richard X’s Warm Bitch was released in 2001. I know this because I heard it in late 2001 in Sister Ray in London, and that’s how I was already downloading and listening to bastard pop from Boom Selection and Audiogalaxy before Kylie did the Brits in 2002 with her Gary Gee / Soulwax recreation of an existing white label – around the time GYBO started?

And indeed – Freelance Hellraiser’s Stroke of Genius was 2001 – August or September I think. And I Wanna Dance With Numbers was first released on white label 12″ with Being Scrubbed earlier in 2001.
