The Best Kept Secret in Podcasting and Radio

The Best Kept Secret in Podcasting and Radio

No, it isn’t some piece of gear, a clever piece of tech or some pro engineering tip. It’s the humble duvet. The closet/wardrobe. Coats. Pillow forts. Blankets. And the power of our voices. Having something to say. The wonderful anonymity of only being able to hear someone, focus purely on their words and not their looks.

The first part I knew, the last part from Lulu Miller is a good reminder of the power of radio and podcasting. That made me cry…because in radio – and indeed print we hear and read the person’s ideas first, not how they look. And in an industry and world that is so looks-based, prejudicial and judgemental, that is everything. Even as a cis white man I have not gotten jobs on the nebulous ‘not fitting in’ – which is ironic since I have made a career of not fitting in because those who fit into pre-made holes cannot innovate, they are stifled by those around them. But I know others have it far harder than me.

That democracy is why I still podcast, and that’s why that part of the video made me cry. I needed to be reminded of that fact. Why I share DIY guides, why I welcome EVERYONE into podcasting (well maybe not corporates and businesses, they usually have few barriers to entry).

All our voices are important, and the more diverse they are, the richer we all are for that.
