Acid Sesame

Sesame Street was always a little surreal and psychedelic early on, but did Sesame Street have a tripped out LSD for kids episode in 1969? Reason I ask is I’ve just found in the first series they covered The Beatles ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’ which despite the band’s protestations is definitely lysergic.

According to the Muppet Wiki and Joan Ganz Cooney one of the founders of the Children’s Television Workshop it was pulled from future broadcasts cos it was pointed out that it stood for L.S.D. Knowing about the counter-cultural background of some of those who made Sesame Street and the Muppets, I really doubt they were innocent about that fact.

And then with the same Hippie Hairy Muppets they cover Hair’s ‘Good Morning Starshine’ with Japan’s favourite Bob McGrath….a song from Hair?

Both are far from kid’s stuff…
