As you might have guessed by my recent mashup and also podcasts on them we are a big fan of ‘Mashup Grandaddies’ Negativland around here. And there’s a new documentary coming (I sort of recognise some of that footage, LOL) on the band by Ryan Worsley. Looks good – it’s hard to capture the chaos of the band at all; they’ve gone from plunderphonics and early cutups and pop songs, video, film, art, performance, radio…so many mediums and platforms and genres.
There’s no other possibility!
As a taster of what Negativland does I was listening to ‘View To The Sun’ earlier, one of the tracks of theirs that never leaves my iPod. Free is such a great album, and gets a little overlooked I think. I really wish I knew what ‘View To The Sun’ was about, seems to be about alienation, rejection and distance.
