The Crumplbangers Discord challenge from last but one weeks was Mashup Puns inspired by this Letterkenny sketch. Mine were Marvin Gayle, Fleet (Wood Mac) Foxes, Manfred 2 Mann, Philip Glass Animals!
So I was inspired to do the exact opposite of how I work – I usually combine tunes that work THEN name them, I usually find working on a name-first tends to stretch mashups into being made to work cos you like the name, rather than matching naturally. So this challenge was extra hard – and at something like 75 or 76 tunes, the biggest challenge yet!
The first mashup I was trying to make Gayle vs Gaye Bykers On Acid – dunno why but given this is probably the best thing I’ve done this year, I’ll take it.
I did google/YT it, I don’t think it’s been done before….Gayle goes all soulful, her singing seems to suit a slower tempo, all drawn out. I didn’t like Gayle’s ABCDEFU when I first heard it, but it’s grown on me.

The next is probably the Crumpliest Flakiest thing DJNoNo has ever done, a bit like watching a car wreck in slow motion while huffing petrol.
Also contains TWO puns, an artist pun as requested but also a side-pun…Ken Dodd’s Diddymen vs Do Wah Diddy – which might have been done before , but NOT like this, LOL.
Richest Llama who was judging the challenge said ‘In my judging spreadsheet, for pun score I wrote “wow” and track score I wrote “insanity.” I still don’t know if I get it, but I kinda love it, it was like a fever dream turned into music? Please explain it to me.’
It’s not that explainable really…who knows how the mind of DJNoNo works.

Finally a double shot of downtempo punnery – the challenge is only reason I make mashups nowadays seemingly!
First is Fleetwood Mac vs Fleet Foxes. If I ever do that Fleetwood Mac remix album I’ve been threatening for literal decades, this will be on it.

Heatwaves is a surprising jam, with a very odd video about living and performing in a lockdown…yes the PTSD of that is basically staining all my work now, like a grain running through it all.
