Rus Khasanov

Loving the work of artist Rus Khasanov, whose videos seem like 3D or animated films but actually are macro photographs and videos of paint, glitter, oil and water on reflective surfaces. Latest video is ‘heterochromia iridum’ with music by Pavel Zhigarev – the name coming from the variation of coloration in eyes.

His other videos are equally amazing – ‘Unity’ with music from Dmitry Evgrafov coming in part from a difficult photo shoot trying to get two paint drops to merge together. Painstaking but also really hard to fake/make in 3D, the natural world is too beautifully random.

And ‘Aurora’ is like planets or stars, constellations and galaxies, like fractals – again with music by Dmitry Evgrafov..

How does he do this?

Well he explains on this video his creative process – that he creates these from household items, mostly from compact discs which he bends and destroys or covers with water and oil. I’m sure it is more involved than that, with glitter and paint and other fluids in some of his videos – but it is amazing how something so deceptively simple can create work so complex and beautiful.

It feels like a modern update to the work of the 1960’s liquid light show pioneers who used projections with oil and water at gigs and happenings.
