Checking out this trap business...which turns out it's part what I thought it was, and part not - I knew it was those skippetty 808 claps and snares, slow like chopping and screwing - what surprised me checking out this potted history of Trap is how most of what is called 'Trap' I'd call crunk or just hiphop from that time. Some post-revisionist history going on, methinks. I was looking into bounce & juke years ago and wrote about it here, and I've only heard the term 'trap' this year...I loved the whole chopping/screwing thing, Three Six Mafia and all that, the slowed down-woozy Syrup feel which has become oh-so-fashionable now. Unsuprisingly traditional trap hiphop has been hijacked by the electro-house/Diplo/dubstep brigade - which is the bit I didn't know about, and explains the rise of all those Black Hippy peeps and Rustie & co. in the end of year lists (srsly - #1 or Top 5 for Kendrick Lamar across the board? Don't. Get. It. El-P's album is far better.) - trap has taken over the blogosphere! Although like The Guardian, by the time Diplo is all over it you know it's probably dead... Anyways here's a track by DJ Sliink which does the Trap thing to Missy E. And here's Flosstradamus with their oompah-tron-tastic trap version of Major Lazer. Not sure I like it - not sure I hate it. ? And Glasgow's Rustie who is also flavour of the month, which fares better on the like question... All of this doesn't totally answer my question 'What is trap?' apart from the skittery 'I'll just draw the whole bar in' type hihats, 808's (808s? In hiphop? THAT'S CRAZY TALK!) the yo! yeah! samples, the stutters referencing DJ Screw, and the evil pitch down vocals which has been in hiphop for ages from Odd Future to Kanye. Oh and a lot of it sounds like crunk or a slightly slower bounce. Otherwise, no idea... In part it makes me think how grime was to US hiphop and how it begat dubstep, and now dubstep (well brostep) is all the rage in the US a similar thing is happening with trap, maybe? Revenge for all those terrible gangsta records. Anyway it fulfils one of my current musical predictions - that not only 90's revival is gonna be rampant, but that skippety beats will make a comeback too. Admittedly I was thinking more house and 2-step speed garage, but this counts too. Oh and someone do a Trap mix of Trap Door? Thnx Kbai! EDIT: Here's LOL Boys with their excellent mashup of Art of Noise and T2 ft Jodie (what did I say about Speed Garage revival?!), Moments In Heartbreak - another from the Diplo / Floss BBC mix so maybe I shouldn't be so harsh on Diplo...
