I WILL SURVIVE! FREE MY PEOPLE! I wasn't planning to make a Pride mix this year, but friends asked me to DJ a two hour set at a live disco event and y'all know how much I L-O-V-E D-I-S-C-O! It was on Midsummer's Night, the night of the Solstice on Saturday, the start of summer, hence the slight summer theme - yes plenty of Donna as well in various forms! Thanks to PomDeter and oki for making it possible and doing great sets beforehand - oki's set is here and you can see Poms still on Twitch. Both way better than mine! And I recorded it...I had to clean it up since I had technical issues and quite a few trainwrecks at the start, but the tunes stand out even if my mixing doesn't! https://www.mixcloud.com/fingertrouble/summer-pride-disco/ Because of current events such as Black Lives Matter, the fact that 50 years on from the first Pride, any Prides that have been held this month in lockdown have become quite rightly protests for our black queer family. So I chose many of the tunes to show the intersection between black/BAME and LGBTQ culture - disco was one of those collaborations, and tends to get overlooked because it is thought of as frivolous. That is actually bullshit because there is politics of resistance, survival, empowerment and racial unity in disco, you just have to look harder and listen harder. In fact the very music and culture was a mix of black and white, gay and straight, male and female. That's why the racists hated it so much, and why they hit back with 'Disco Sucks' - but we had the last laugh, with jazz funk, electro, house and techno all the way through to modern club music, disco is the grandparents of it all!
