I'm going to Coachella in the US (Indio, near Palm Springs - desert! 40 degrees! I am going to die!) in April, as mentioned on the podcast...so as Coachella approaches I've been checking out the lineup - especially the acts I don't know. I'll be dropping some of the ones I like on here and on hopefully a podcast soon. First up is the strange and wonderfully named Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA) - with similarities to the Witch House scene this LA hiphop group/collective does 'horrorcore' rap but also some Pharrell-style psychedelic rap noodlings like this from 'The Jet Age Of Tomorrow' (like Animal Collective or WuTang they all have their own aliases and groups). https://youtu.be/jF89LtjP_XQ Love that album! I prefer it to their more outre stuff (raping neighbours? Eh? And of course the faggot word makes a massive comeback...(grr) but it's hard to take it seriously as it's all done in a cartoon surreal style like some Freddie's Wolf Nightmare 13th - stop me before I go all Humanities Thesis but I think they as much parody that gangstah rap stance as much as celebrate it ...and yes they just as much rap about going to the Super Market on a surreal slacker trip...) - if you still think the likes of Tyler is serious then check out the Pitchfork article about them or the video for French. Tongue in cheek, or punk style shenanigans - or at least far more complex than first seems.
