Irene Cara, Fame video

RIP Irene Cara

Sadly we’ve lost Irene Cara, 🙁

Only 63? WAY too young. Fame was such an influence on me as a kid doing music – as well as my well-documented lusting over Mr Shorofsky, it showed the nuts and bolts of recording and music – and also made New York look glamorous. Irene was an important part of that- the theme song, and playing Coco in the film so beautifully.

She also co-wrote and sang the theme song to Flashdance – What A Feeling, for which she won an Academy Award (weirdly she isn’t featured in the video, that’s Jennifer Beals not Irene).

Which when they play this at Duckie, there’s always a pile-up on the dance floor as people try and do the movements and acrobatics and fail drunkenly. I think DJs do stuff like that on purposes (see also Come On Eileen, Rasputin and Sweet Caroline for drunken singing)

Rest in power, Irene.
