Crumplstock 10 - DJNoNo set Phoning In From The Apocalypse

Crumplstock 10 – DJNoNo set & brief roundup

Yes like Glasto Crumplstock 10 is over! (and unlike Glasto we won’t be going on about it for the next 4 week. Hey 6Music:, my favourite Glasto moment is when you shut the fuck up about it. Don’t need reminders of an event I missed out on tickets in not one but two different years!)

The previous Crumplstock I did a full roundup – but between the last proper Duckie at RVT on Saturday (yes really, sadly, and meant I missed a large chunk of Saturday’s sets), the last Gay Shame and London Pride this coming weekend and going out last Saturday to the penultimate Duckie I simply don’t have the time. Also partly why no After Party Set. just was too tired.

Or the mental energy – Oslo, Roe vs Wade, shit’s getting real.

There was a good reason why DJNoNo’s set was called ‘Phoning In From The Apocalypse’ was called that, an angry upbeat set – it was meant to be more positive and it is in parts with the Happy Hardcore, but the apocalyptic theme was there from the start I just amped it up.

I played a lot of originals, mashups, remixes, metal 8-bit and symphonic covers, bits from CONELRAD and Kids in the Hall, rave, breakbeat, 80’s doomy pop, and started with a Pansy Division track ‘Smells Like Queer Spirit’ for Pride/current events I’d heard the night before at Duckie. Good tunes for the end of the world….

There’s a few unreleased tracks in there, the HardCure track ‘Let’s Go To A Whispering Forest’, NoNo Limits and a new demo using Wikka Wrap vs Doja Cat – and All My Lubbers totally violating the Twitch TOS, but fuck it.

Of the other sets of the weekend I caught, the highlights were oki’s mashups using Dutch and German schlager/organ tracks, like last year Duuzu’s very kinetic mashup (post mashup?) set bringing the Daft Punk goodness, PimpDaddySupreme’s new mashups in his set – love the Haddaway and B-52’s live ones, look forward to playing those on the podcast.

Another highlight was the set of the mysterious and anonymous Allan Smashee, full of Crumply Goodness – skip to 1 hour 38 mins if the embedded video doesn’t do that. Allan! ALLAN!

Talking of post mashups – an idea I’ve not really got my head around, but there definitely was a genre and generational shift amongst bootleg/bastard pop/mashup producers and people who come more from the Neil Cicierega Soundclown world and are layering those things in a plunderphonic style – so Departure did a great set, and Frisco17, TheRandomSapphire and Pulsar Mashups part of a new breed of experimental mashups

Also DJNoNo got some love on iWillBattle‘s Muppet Mashups set, which was down his and my street totally – and video (so my video for Batty Dub got played but if you like Muppet Mashups, covers and remixes, it is definitely worth a watch – reminders of ToTom’s Crumplstock 9 set..

ah! bringing the Irish mashups was also a highlight – I mean starting with Val Doonican? SO CRUMPL. Loved the film soundtrack mashups particulary from Mashin’ Picture soundtrack – the U2 vs Michael Nyman and Lorde vs Cranberries ones.

And Marty Batfreak ended the whole shebang on Sunday with a great set – and also during the After Party we chiiled to the sounds of Thomas L Jackson and the ska playlist of the TapRoom Twins – Jo and Scott Cairo of Pilchard, who couldn’t DJ due to laptop issues – much missed both of you!

EDIT: now checking the sets I missed if available – loved oki’s first set, some old mashups I missed, especially the Christina Aguilera vs Pink Floyd, and the ‘Crumplnet’ set by fnogg showing that left mic is the new style! News on the street is he played some DJ Fno Fno as well….for the muted bits they’ve posted it over at Archive.org – a great resource, shame their streaming video player sucks donkey’s balls, but I’m downloading it for playing later.
