I Do Call It A Comeback! RETURN of Totom, Solcofn & Dunproofin

The Bootleg Revival starts here…(and Bootie Mashup and Sowndhaus and…)

Shortly after posting my latest Radio Clash where I posit – and encourage – an old guard mashup revival – THREE of the old school GYBO bootleggers come out of retirement. Zeitgeist or what?

First up is ToTom who I didn’t realise hadn’t posted at all in 2020, he has such a rich back catalogue it’s easy to catch up on that and miss the new ones. I might have given a little input on this but it’s all ToTom’s genius at taking one of my favourite Bowie tracks that criminally under-mashed – Five Years – and giving it a new. dare I say emo spin via My Chemical Romance. It works really well.

Next up is Solcofn, who has been away for much longer, not sure how long but as a longterm GYBO moderator – and even moderator of the short-lived Mutantpop forum, remember that? – he’s been part of the mashup community for a long time. He’s appropriately mashed Mark Morrison’s Return of the Mac with Groove Armada and I love the feel of this – and also Orbital vs Britney Spears. I prefer the first one, it’s got a really nice chilled feel and a really strong comeback.

And the one that surprised me was the return of Dunproofin to mashups! I was thinking as I was putting together 335 that it was a shame Andy didn’t make mashups anymore…and what do I find out yesterday after posting – he has created a new mashup of Vampire Weekend vs Stevie Wonder. Not the electro/techno banger I’d expect, but it grooves along nicely.

And I’m guessing this is the wonder of AI extraction since I didn’t think there is an acapella of the Vampire Weekend track – with Spleeter and RX8 and VirtualDJ having these facilites, expect an AI-fuelled renaissance of mashups.

And there are rumours that Wax Audio is back in the game as well….

So who’s next? on my bucket list would be World Famous Audio Hacker – miss him – and Jimmi Jammes and Bingo Starr! who both seem to have stopped 4-5 years ago, and someone else said DJ Earlybird which is another really good call, someone who was featured a lot on the podcast and blog back then.

And just found that djrozroz – maker of one of my favourite mashups ever – never actually stopped. Yay!

So who is on your Mashup Lazarus Wish List?

If we can drag Party Ben out of retirement, then we can officially call off the Coronapocalypse.
