Yesterday, no The Night Before, well actually 10 years ago almost to the Day (In The Life) we said Hello Goodbye to the 7th show, but it’s time to Get Back to Number Eight. Number Eight, Number Eight Days A Week!

A bumper special – this time focusing not on mashups or remixes but covers by black/African American and non-white artists from reggae to rock, soul to ska, funk to funky pop, disco to yer down and out blues – and even some ol’ jazz that you know I love so much (actually it’s the good stuff!).

You can hear all the previous podcasts at these links – be warned, I’m not exactly a massive fan, so these cover my love/hate of the Beatles…and take the piss quite a lot. I was trying to troll EMI!

I would say the pisstakes are affectionate but that wouldn’t be exactly true, I’ve grown to like them more since but I still don’t like the omnipresence of their work, although a lot of that has died away…The music and iconography as a idolised thing/untouchable idea/cultural concept are different things, the latter are quite troubling, even if the music is good. It’s wise to respect the talent of the former and disrespect the latter, which most mashups and remixes do quite dramatically and funnily.

Which is odd, because I love the covers in this edition unequivocally.
