And the second Coming Out part is about falling in and out of love…from the mid-90’s dance songs sampling Ewen Macoll’s ‘The First Time Ever I Saw His Face’ (via Roberta Flack) to the Britpop come down. There’s a Trainspotting nod in Bedrock ft KYO, and I bought the Grace Jones 7″ around that time, I knew Joy Division would creep in somehow!

Big fan of Sebadoh’s Bakesale which has a lot of wonderfully twisted songs like this, and the McAlmost & Butler album was in rotation for years after my coming out, as was the Grandaddy album, Mogwai’s Ten Rapid, Bjork’s Post, SFA and Pulp albums. Was also a big Spiritualized fan back then, and a massive Protection poster that I think Kirk found for me was on the wall, stared at it many a time listening to these songs.

Also Higher by the Cardigans reminds me of Kirk who supported me through all this, and indeed everything beautiful was far away, 9,000 miles then in fact. I sent him a mixtape with a lot of these songs on it – wish I had a copy.

This one goes out to Bob, Stuart, Michael, John 1 and John 2 – elements of them all in these songs. But mostly the first time is the best and worst.
