As you might have guessed from the last post I’ve been revisiting past eras to find music of resistance for today – the UK and Trump situation isn’t a new one, resisting Thatcher, Nixon, Reagan and Bush v1 and v2 created a lot of music pertinent to today. One of those is The Au-Pairs with America:
Remember the 50s and Mr. McCarthy
Let’s have a witch hunt and nuclear party
Paranoia in America…
Communards – Breadline Britain, still sadly true:
And Jimmy’s previous band had serious political clout too, with the likes of Why? and Hard Rain, which I think is a repost but it’s worth repeating:
Here he comes this American man,
Head so full with a deadly plan,
Says he’ll tell you says no lies and blood is dripping
From his hands,
The blood is dripping from his hands.
Ooh when hard rain falls
Ooh when hard rain falls
Ooh when the fascists call what will you do?
Ooh when the fascists call what will you do?
Democracy crumbles, under what will you do?”
And even Boys Say Go then-popsters Depeche Mode were at it too, expressing political fatigue, but also the feeling that love alone can’t save the world sometimes.
Consequently
I’ve a tendency
To be unhappy, you see
The thoughts in my head
All the words that were said
All the blues and the reds
Get to me…
There was a time
When all on my mind was love
Now I find
That most of the time
Love’s not enough
In itself
