Why am I reposting this Radiohead video from 2 months ago? Well it spookily demonstrates the cultural influence of not one but two people who have died in the last few days. Today we heard about the sad death of Robin Hardy, director of the Wicker Man and Wicker Tree. A few days ago I heard that Gordon Murray had died, writer, producer and creator of the Trumptonshire Trilogy (Trumpton, Chigley and Camberwick Green).
Oddly this video for Burn The Witch is directly inspired by both. Wicker Man inspired a lot visually and musically – from Hot Fuzz to gothic folk and the likes of Scarfolk, and indeed my Summerisle podcasts focusing on the musical inspirations before and after Wicker Man.
I hope that people go and check out both those works – tells you more about the 1970’s than any I <3 19XX program ever could. Also the Radiohead tune also seemed to oddly forebode the current racist witch-hunts that are going on in the UK:
Burn the witch
Burn the witch
We know where you live…
Abandon all reason
Avoid all eye contact
Do not react
Shoot the messengers
This is a low flying panic attack
