The return of Gold Panda

Have to say, I kind of missed that there was new Gold Panda coming out called ‘Good Luck And Do Your Best’…Lucky Shiner, his debut album has not left my iPod since 2010, the only album to have that honour. Later releases didn’t really do it for me…so it’s great that it seems GP has gone back to that acoustic, Eastern, laid-back late-afternoon sun vibe. The album seems to follow that template. And as a review mentions the photographic ‘golden hour’ and his tracks at best seem to reflect that, like the start of the video for Time Eater, a sort of warm curious glow that could become cloyingly aspirational, but doesn’t. Probably because it comes from personal experience, and that shines through (if you pardon the pun).

Not as fond of ‘In The Car’ (it seems too much of a sunny J-Dilla copy to me, might grow on me though), but the video is ace. How many musicians would a) be in a video with their granny and b) show off the delights of Chelmsford, and visit a grave of a relative?. Although I can now guess where Lucky Shiner’s title comes from. The brief was to look boring, but as he said in the statement, it comes over as rather sweet. And as someone who seems very private, it’s nice to see something personal about him and his life.

Both videos seem to be about that, that the boring moments aren’t, and the supposedly active moments at work are boring. Or are they? Those idling moments when your brain is either at rest or somewhere else while doing manual work, a very Gold Panda sort of space.
