Almost embarrassed to post this, since I’ve heard the name (Madonna tour) and seen him DJ (that Boiler Room appearance) but not really checked out Kaytranada’s productions yet I know he’s BIG and everywhere now. Yeah Two Thousand and Late, but hey, this is my musical journey, and I don’t do the latest thing purely because of hype.
They call it ‘trap soul’ but it reminds me a lot of the cloud rap and neo-soul / nu-RnB and chilled rap from a while ago (Weeknd before getting big, How To Dress Well, Clams, Main Attracktionz, early Odd Future, Black Hippy, Babe Rainbow etc). I love the production and this video, not really sure about it til half-way through. I love the last half though!
Looks like the woozy, surreal nature of that video isn’t a fluke either, like shown by this video for ‘At All’:
Also he’s a Missy Elliott and Janet freak, which 4 My People more than Alright by me (see what I did there? ;-), as shown by this (sadly not available in decent quality) version of Rain for Mick Jenkins which reminds me totally of the best track of Supa Dupa Fly:
And he’s rightly famous for this remix of Janet’s If:
And his own music rocks too. Well rocks in a way that is almost horizontal, like his “Leave Me Alone (feat. Shay Lia)” – new album called 99% is out shortly.
Love this remix of Banks – Waiting Game. Warped wonky neo-soul to the fore!
But quite often like with Clams and others before him, I just like the instrumental tracks, like ‘Jupiter’ or ‘Don’t Get It Confused’ – kind of like a trap electronica, if Gold Panda decided to put his Kangol on, or Four Tet started breakdancing. Slowly.
